PhRMA Report Highlights 20 Osteoporosis Medications in Clinical Trials

A May 2011 report published by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) highlights over 800 new medications in clinical trials for diseases disproportionately affecting women, including 20 medications to treat osteoporosis and osteopenia. These potential treatments include oral calcitonin and parathyroid hormone receptors, among others. Access the full report here.

Several PhRMA member companies, including pharmaceutical development firms like Amgen, Eli Lilly, Novaris, and GlaxoSmithKline, are all in the process of seeking Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for these treatments, with various potential medications in all phases of the clinical trial process. For more information on the approval process, visit the FDA’s website here.

Pharmaceutical treatments remain one of the most effective ways to treat diagnosed cases of osteoporosis. Proper treatment and adherence to an osteoporosis drug regimen can significantly reduce fracture risk among diagnosed patients.
