Service and Application Information
Women In Government is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that empowers women state legislators nationwide with policy programs, leadership development and networking opportunities. The bipartisan Board of Directors comprises 14 members (6 officers and 8 regional directors) all of whom are sitting women state legislators. The Board maintains parity between Republicans and Democrats among both officers and regional directors.
Regular duties of Women In Government Board Members include:
- Participating in scheduled Board governance meetings (virtual and in-person)
- Providing oversight and guidance to the organization in accordance with the bylaws, individual Board role and strategic objectives
- Recruiting and confirming bipartisan Women In Government State Directors according to the organization’s bylaws and strategic plan practice
- Encouraging fellow women legislators to attend Women In Government conferences and participate in Women In Government events
- Introducing Women In Government staff to potential private sector partners
- Attending and recruiting for Women In Government events (virtual and in-person)
- Serving as a visible and vocal leader of Women In Government at a variety of organizational and partner events and programs (virtual and in-person)
Board Positions and Terms of Service:
- Officers will serve one-year terms beginning in November 2026
- Regional directors for the East and South will serve two-year terms beginning in November 2026
- Regional directors for the West and Midwest will serve one-year terms beginning in November 2026 (Western and Midwestern regional directors will serve two-year terms beginning in November 2027 to stagger terms of service from Eastern and Southern regional directors)
Application Process:
- All applicants (including current Women In Government Board Members) must completeand submit an application by August 15, 2026
- New applicants must also submit two (2) reference letters by August 15, 2026
- All applicants must currently be serving in a state legislature in 2026, as well as serving 1/1/2027 – 12/31/2027, in order to be considered eligible
- Nominating Committee will review all applications, vote and present the 14-member slate of candidates to the full Board for approval at its September 28 meeting
- 2027 candidates will be informed of their application status following full vote
- New Board members will be sworn in at the November 20 meeting at the Leadership & Innovation Summit in Savannah, GA
